Mulu Caves 3 Days/2 Nights

Mulu is home to Mulu National Park and one of Borneo’s greatest attractions. Deer Cave is the world’s largest natural rock chamber that can contain London’s St. Paul Cathedral five times over and accommodate 40 Boeing 747s side by side. It is accessible by plank walks through the jungle and by lighted paths throughout. At 5pm each day, over 1 million bats blacken the sky as they depart Deer Cave in search of food.

Itinerary

  • Day 1
Flight from Miri to Mulu. Upon arrival at Mulu airport, you will be met by your guide and transferred by boat for a short 15-minute ride to the resort. After check-in you will begin the plank walk through a 120 million year old primary rainforest passing through a peat swamp, alluvial and limestone flats on your way to some of the world's most remarkable caves. When you reach the entrance, you are left with no doubt that you are about to enter the largest cave passage in the world. Deer Cave is simply huge - more than 1 mile in length and never less than 300 feet high and wide. The main chamber, which is partially lit by sunlight, is 600 feet wide and 400 feet tall. It is large enough to hold 40 widebody 747's parked side by side. This is the area where deer used to shelter so the local Penan and Berawan people named the cave Gua Payau or Gua Rasa - meaning Deer Cave. A short walk away is Lang Cave. It is famous for its limestone rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is well lit and relatively small and offers good opportunities to view its inhabitants of swiftlets and bats.

This evening you will be witness to one of nature's most spectacular displays. With the weather permitting, you witness a huge black cloud as millions of bats emerge from Deer Cave in search of food. They blacken the sky overhead as once again you are reminded of the magic and mystery of yet another wonder of Borneo.

  • Day 2
This morning you depart by boat to the Mulu Park Headquarters to begin your plank walk along the cliffs to Wind and Clearwater Caves. The views are spectacular as the walk is over 10 stories high along the river with birds and wildlife all around. Your guide will explain the unique features and highlights as you walk through both caves.

Afterwards, you can swim in the crystal clear mountain waters and enjoy a picnic lunch in an idyllic setting by the riverbank surrounded by the primary rainforest.

Return to the lodge by boat passing native settlements and locals making their way down the river for shopping, errands or simply visiting friends and family. The afternoon is at your leisure to relax or try some of the optional activities offered by the resort.

Dinner tonight will be at a local restaurant. Afterwards, you will depart for a night walk to experience the sights and sounds of the jungle as darkness settles.

  • Day 3
Day at leisure until afternoon transfer to the airport for your flight from Mulu to Miri.
