Sarawakian 7 Days/6 Nights
The largest of Malaysia’s 13 states, with the riverine capital city of Kuching, Sarawak
covers an area of 50,000 square miles. With steep interior terrain, luxuriant tropical
rainforests and home to 23 ethnic groups including the famous Iban Tribe, the last
headhunters of Borneo living in traditional longhouses. You will experience one of Borneo's true attractions - a stay at Batang Ai and a longboat adventure upriver to visit
the Iban tribe in an authentic longhouse. You will spend a day living and experiencing life, Iban style. For the more adventuresome, arrangements can be made to stay in the very basic and rustic guesthouse, Nanga Sumpa, located across the river from the longhouse.
Itinerary
- Day 1
Arrival in Kuching, the capital city of the state of Sarawak, and your gateway to Borneo, and transfer to your hotel.
- Day 2
Morning tour of Kuching. Afterwards visit the Sarawak Cultural Village. This living museum portrays and conserves the unique myriad of various cultural and customs of Borneo. Dinner at a local home with a Sarawakian family.
- Day 3
Depart Kuching for a fascinating and educational overland trip to Batang Ai. Along the way you will pass small villages and settlements, roadside fruit stands, rice fields, rubber plantations and people going about their unhurried, simple, everyday life. Afternoon arrival at Lake Batang Ai where a boat will transport you across the lake and upriver to the Longhouse Resort.
- Day 4
Morning departure by wooden longboat for the upriver journey to Wong Tibu situated in the Iban heartland. You witness along the banks native farmers knee deep in rice fields, small boats carrying supplies from town to villages and unusual birds and hawks overhead in a sky that spans the horizon. Your unforgettable day is spent with the people of the longhouse.
- Day 5
This morning you depart Batang Ai for the journey back to Kuching. Early afternoon arrival in Kuching. Dinner at an excellent seafood restaurant.
- Day 6
Early morning departure for Bako National Park. The various types of animals spotted at Bako include proboscis monkeys, silver leaf monkeys, long tail macaques, wild boars, monitor lizards and numerous birds. Tropical rainforest ranges from mangrove to kerangas (heath forest), tropical swamp vegetation, cliff vegetation and beach vegetation. There will be hiking through jungle trails and swimming in the sea by secluded beaches. Return to Kuching by mid-afternoon.
- Day 7
Transfer to airport.
